For SprawlTag’s first local restaurant review I decided to visit Burger Island, a fast food burger joint on Story Road, just north of Texas State Highway 183 (Airport Freeway) In Irving, Texas. Burger Island is located next to a Golden Chick restaurant and a McDonald’s.. The building Burger Island calls home is not too loud or fancy and can easily be missed when driving down Story. Not too many parking spots are available but they are sufficient. Walking in, you will find a small dining area. However, it is never too crowded.
When I visit Burger Island, I usually get my food to go and never have to wait too long. The order takers have always been friendly and welcoming and it usually takes about 10 minutes. Food is delivered over the counter and if you want to dine in, you are free to sit yourself. The tables and chairs are dated but always clean.
What’s on the menu?
Burger Island serves burgers, sandwiches, salads, appetizers and drinks. The burgers are big and the fries are served in big portions especially when ordered separately. In previous trips, I have had the Hawaiian Cheeseburger, Jungle Burger, Mushroom Cheeseburger and the Guacamole Cheeseburger. For this review, I ordered the first combo on the menu. The Big Island burger.
The Big Island burger has sauteed onions, mushrooms, jalapenos, American and provolone cheese, mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles. The combo comes with thick cut seasoned fries and a fountain drink with unlimited refills if you dine in.
Despite having all those ingredients, The Big Island burger was not too sloppy or soggy. Their half pound burgers are bigger than most big name burger joints. Actually, I find it more convenient to cut in half but eating them without cutting is a problem. Their food is made to order so you get freshly made meat and fries. The beef patty was nicely seasoned and so are the thick cut fires. All the combos come with a fountain drink.
Is It Worth It?
I ended up paying just below to $13 for the Big Island Combo. Compared to other big name fast food restaurants, it is a bit pricey. Regardless, I do believe the food worth a try.
