History Of The Former Texas School Book Depository In Dallas Texas
The former Texas School Book Depository In Dallas Texas is one of the most famous buildings in Texas. Currently known as the Dallas County Administration Building, the building is mostly for being the site where President Kennedy’s alleged assassin was located in November 1963. Since it’s initial construction in the late 1890’s the building has been home to many companies. Today it is one the most visited attractions in Dallas and home to the Sixth Floor Museum.
Southern Rock Island Plow Company 1898
In 1898 the original building was built in the same location by the Rock Island Plow Company. The company had purchased the land 4 years earlier in 1894 for $9,000.
The original building was struck by lightning in 1901 and burnt down. Using the same foundation, the current building was constructed. This time the building had 7 stories.
Perfection-Aire Building 1937
An air conditioning company called Perfection-Aire began leasing the building in 1937.
Sexton Foods Building
Chicago-based grocery wholesale company John Sexton & Co began to use the building as a distribution center in 1941.
The Texas School Book Depository company
In 1963 The Texas School Book Depository company leased the building. On the 16th of October Lee Harvey Oswald began working for the company. Approximately 1 month later he is alleged to have assassinated John F. Kennedy from the 6th floor of the building.
Dallas County Administration
The government of Dallas County purchased the building in 1977 and renovations began. In 1988 the 6th floor was opened an a museum. Now known as the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. In 2002 the 7th floor was opened as a gallery.
On the 22nd of November President John F. Kennedy was assassinated as he rode in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza. Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested for the murder of the President and Dallas Officer J. D. Tippit. Oswald was accused of hiding the rifle behind a stack boxes and his palm prints were found on the weapon. The 6th floor window is now sealed off from the public and surrounded by boxes arranged almost the way they were in 1963.
The former Texas School Depository is located in Dealey Plaza which is a National Historic Landmark. Dealey Plaza is the location of the first home built in Dallas and is considered by many to be the birthplace of Dallas.
